Introduction of the workshop

Cities are the engines of economic growth and at the centre of human aspiration. More than ever before, cities are homes to humanity’s greatest ambitions. But cities can also become home to increasing social disparity, poverty, pollution, congestion, waste and environmental problems. The capacity of nations to pursue their economic and social agendas will increasingly depend on their ability to shape and govern their cities.

Phnom Penh has witnessed significant urban growth over the last 10 years, and now has close to 2 million residents. By 2050, it is expected that 36% of its residents will live in urban areas. The city faces mounting challenges in basic service provision including drainage, wastewater treatment, public transport and solid waste management. To enable well-planned and well-managed urban growth, it is critical that systems and institutions be introduced early to avoid locking Phnom Penh and other cities into a pattern of unsustainable growth.

To meet the challenges, Dynamic Technologies (subsidiary of the Dynamic Group), in collaboration with The National Council for Sustainable Development, Urbanetic Pte Ltd of Singapore and iOne Cloud hosted a two-day vision workshop for economic planners, city administrators, urban technologists, real-estate industry executives, sustainable development experts, city planners, architects and developers from the ministries of economic affairs, environment and urban development - titled “Laying the Foundation for Building Liveable Smart and Sustainable Cities of the Future”, conducted by Mr. Saibal Das Chowdhury, Co-founder and CEO of Urbanetic. Mr. Jose Alfano, founding director of Urbanetic Australia joined the event as well.
